The guild is in need of a new Historian. Please consider volunteering for this FUN position. LuAnn will be happy to give you some pointers and get you settled in as historian.
Mary’s River Quilt Guild
General Meeting May 23, 2013
President Beth called the meeting to order and welcomed our
two visitors.
Marcia of Program introduced our speaker Jody Houghton who
is a fabric designer. Jody shared how
she became involved in arts and design which was an evolutionary process. A number of quilts were shown using her
fabrics and she shared information on ways quilters can create their own
fabrics and have it printed at Spoonflower.com; she recommended Photo Shop
programming for design work and grommetworld.com as a resource for some
supplies.
Sisters quilt show is coming up and signup sheets were
passed for volunteers to work on Friday and Saturday at the drug store. The drug store would like to see fifteen
larger quilts and about eight-five smaller ones to maximize impact. On the guild website there are forms to be
completed and quilts and forms should be brought to the next general meeting in
June.
Chicks with Attitude reported that they have about 120
chicks made but if anyone is interested in making more, Wendy has supplies
available.
Show and Tell included the Service Committee report and was
followed by a break so that members could get a close look at Jody’s quilts and
purchase fabrics.
Block of the month for May was the Hawaiian Shirt and
baskets are June’s block. The basket
block would be perfect for potholders to add to the guild sales this summer.
Beth introduced Linda Jewett who has agreed to be the chair
for Quilts in the Garden 2014. She is
looking for about five members to form a steering committee. If anyone has ideas of garden locations that
would be appropriate for the event, please let her know. Also please consider joining the steering
committee.
Hospitality reported on the gathering prior to the meeting
at which new members were introduced to the guild board members and committee
chairs plus they had a tour of the library and service committee storage
areas. There was a drawing for fat
quarters and a gift certificate.
Round Robin advised that their next meeting is June 24th
and Cindy did a spring cleaning of the free basket. Anyone who has items that can be added to the
basket is welcome to bring them to their meeting.
Publications report was about the new brochure for the
guild. It is advised that future membership
forms will include a release (permission) to use pictures taken during guild
programs and thus insure that everyone
is aware and comfortable with pictures that may appear on the guild web or in
brochures for the guild.
Challenge has only two packets left – better hurry to get
one. Judy then advised that there are
supplies available to make potholders and basket blocks are especially needed
for the museum store sales.
Judy introduced information on the Touch Project, part of
the sister city program between Corvallis and Uzhhorod, which is gathering
supplies to make sewing kits. Needed
items are needles, small spools of thread, embroidery floss, pins, buttons and
small scissors. These will help people
to take care of their own families and build income opportunities.
Program for June 27th is Rachel Greco sharing The
Homeland Army: Women in World War I.
Rachel is well known to many as the owner of Grandma’s Attic in Dallas.
For Quilt County, Alice Hall of the Unitarian Church is
looking for quilts that were a challenge or made because of a challenge. Her contact information can be found in the
May-June newsletter. Marcia is looking
for donations of small quilts that can be displayed and sold at the Wine Vault
with the proceeds to be given to Permission to Play.
The guild is sponsoring a class by Phyllis Prom who was the
speaker at our April meeting. It will be
held on June 12 from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm.
Marcia has class information and costs plus there is information in the
current newsletter. The class will be
held at JanniLou’s.
The Philomath Scout Lodge is having a Quilt Show and More
fund raiser on September 14-15 between the hours of 8 am and 6 pm. The guild will rent a table so that
potholders, Chicks with Attitude and guild members can display quilts or quilt
items for sale.
