General Meeting September 26, 2013

Marcia introduced our speaker, Jeannette De Nicolis Meyer who presented a program on discharging fabrics covering the techniques, challenges and safety factors of the processes.

After the program there was a short break followed by show and tell of members projects.

President Beth introduced two guests and then made the following announcements.

-Thanks were offered to all who participated in the Philomath Quilt Show

-In November the election for the position of vice-president and secretary will take place.  At this time Carmen Steggell will be on the ballot for vice-president and Sharon Fries as Secretary.  Non-elected positions for the board are:

Beth asked anyone interested in being marketing chair to please contact her.

The secretary shared two thank you notes received and noted that the guild had received an announcement for the Hugo Ladies Quilts in the Country show being held October 4^th and 5^th from 9am to 3 pm (6050 Hugo Road, Hugo, Oregon).

-Announcements noted that the Trillium Craft Show would take place November 15^th and 16^th and the Philomath Frolic craft show will be November 2^nd and 3^rd.

Program reminded everyone that next month will be time to share this year’s Challenge quilts, purchase fabric for next year and remember that the person with the best story wins a prize.  Remember that there is still time to visit a number of venues for Quilt County.  In November the guild will have a service night and silent auction opportunity.

Our Library chairperson introduced the latest books and is interested in receiving any new suggestions for books.

Our newsletter chair would like all articles for the next publication to be submitted by the end of October because of the fast approaching holidays.

At the October meeting there will be the drawing for this year’s raffle quilt so members have one last chance to purchase tickets or persuade others to purchase tickets.

Quilts in the Garden have set July 26, 2014 as the date for this event.

Round Robin is encouraging participants to bring their quilts to the November meeting for show and tell plus members are invited to begin signing up for next year.

Santiam Scrappers Show is September 28^th at the Senior Center in Lebanon (80 Tangent Street).

The potholder committee reported that fourteen persons produced 111 items this year with 75 being sold at the museum store which provided about $263 for the guild.  Other venues also had sales so this was a successful effort and can continue to be with members being able to purchase item at our next meeting.  The three top producers were Phyllis Pearson, Debbie Garvin and Flo Calhoun.  Thank you ladies.

Secret Sisters will have a harvest fest theme in October; try out the new Eats and Treats in November and end the year with a Christmas party.  Please consider joining the group and sign up for next year’s fun events.

Block of the Month had the drawing for this month’s blocks and suggested that one might use the block of the month for the October Challenge program so that it isn’t daunting at all to participate in either program.

Permission 2 Play thanked those who made donations to the program.

Hospitality reminded everyone that nametags are important and the prizes exciting.  Shirley K. won fat quarters and Jan T. a gift certificate for having their nametags.

The final announcement:   the International Quilt Show held in Long Beach historically will be changing locations and as of July, 2014 will be held in Portland.

MARY’S RIVER QUILT GUILD

GENERAL MEETING OF SEPTEMBER 27, 2012

The meeting began with President Lisa welcoming everyone and introducing visitors.  She then introduced Irene of the Benton County History Museum staff who shared information of the upcoming fund raiser for the museum.  The museum raises about half of the operating budget with fund raising activities and they have an upcoming.  For the auction they are looking for items which guild members may have to offer and to invite all of us to make a purchase of a special item.  The auction dates are October 12-29, 2012.

Three upcoming quilt shows were noted:  Legacies in Thread by the Emerald Valley Quilters of Eugene on September 29 and 30^th; Purple Frog in Jefferson has a show September 29 and 30^th; Seeing Red at the Old Aurora Colony Museum will take place from October 12-21,2012.

Our guild needs a few more entries for the Stitches in Bloom show which will take place January 25-26, 2013 with workshops on January 22-24^th.  Entry of a quilt also provides entry into the show.

Members are invited to make friendship blocks (instructions on the MRQG website) for the outgoing Treasurer in blue and green batiks and for our outgoing President in bright batiks.

Treasurer reported that the guild raised $930 on the Chicks and potholder sales at the museum.

Service Committee invited members to adopt quilts that need quilting or binding.  Those adopting one of the quilts will receive a fat quarter.

The Challenge committee reminded everyone the October meeting will feature this year’s challenge quilts and stories of the members.  The packets and information on 2013 Challenge will be available for $10 and include a yard of fabric.

Jean McDaniel will be quilting the 2013 Raffle quilt.

Quilt County was explained as an event that happens every other year for Benton County and 2013 will be the 20^th anniversary of the event.  People are invited to find a location and gather some friends to mount a show of their work.  A sign-up sheet was passed around for those interested and this will be repeated during meetings for the next couple of months.    A firm and complete list of locations will be needed by April, 2013 in order to allow time for the information to be published for the September, 2013 show.  

The Raffle 2014 committee is organizing a hand quilting class at JanniLou’s shop with cost of the class ($15)  being reimbursed with five hours contribution of time on the quilt for 2014.   The monies will come from the scholarship funds as approved by the board and a sign-up sheet was passed for members to indicate interest in a hand quilting class.

Round Robin chair Cindy explained the process used for the current year’s projects and invited interested guild members to join the group next year.  They need all interested persons to sign up by December 31, 2012.  A sign-up sheet will be available for those interested over the next two months.

Secret Sisters shared information on their picnic last week which twenty-one people attended.   There is information and forms on the guild website for this group and they ask all interested persons to please sign up by year end so that all may be invited to the first meeting of the new year, January, 2013.

Block of the month committee displayed next month’s block, introduced next year’s theme of Cultural Heritage and had the drawing for the blocks brought to the meeting.

Hospitality had the drawing for those members in attendance who wear their nametags.

Show and Tell began with the Round Robin group displaying their quilts.

After a short break, our speaker, guild member Beth Reitveld, presented Quilting Around the World, My Adventures in Tokyo and Paris.

General Meeting Minutes

9/23/10

Lisa Ullmer, President, called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM.

Ms. Ullmer conducted the Guest Roll call. There were 6 guests.

Ms. Ullmer notified the group that there is still a search for a new President, Treasurer, Hospitality Chair and Webmaster and than there was a clipboard for nominations in the back.

Ms. Ullmer asked if anyone would be able to host Aniko Fehrer, the speaker for the March 2011 meeting. The stipulation to this is that the host house cannot have any pets. Corey Arentz volunteered to host her for the March meeting.

Library - Jean McDaniel shared that there are new books and that the newsletter details the new additions. Ms. McDaniel also reminded members that the time period for checking out a book is two months.

Service Committee - Ms. Ullmer informed members that tonight the Service committee was selling black and brown fabrics for $1/yard. Additionally, the service committee is looking for volunteers to quilt and bind service committee quilts.

Ms. Ullmer reminded the attendees that next months meeting was the Challenge Quilt meeting.

Raffle Quilt 2010 - Shirley Strub reported that in light of the fact that the space that the guild was able to secure for the Fall Festival was not near major foot traffic and that it was too small to contain the canopy that protects the quilt, the guild would not be selling tickets at Fall Festival. The quilt will continue to hang in the Benton County Historical Museum until the drawing in October.

Raffle Quilt 2011 - Joan Helzer announced that the Executive Board (and appropriate committee chairs) of the guild decided to open up the quilting of the raffle quilts to guild members who are professional long arm quilters. The guild would provide reimbursement for the efforts and anyone interested should submit a bid by October 1.

Round Robin - Cindy Graff passed out fliers about Round Robin and asked that members who were interested in participating sign up by December 31st.

Secret Sisters - Jan Andrews told the members that the goal of Secret Sisters is to make new friends and have fun. Ms. Andrews drew attention to the sign-up sheets that were in the back and also announced that the deadline was December 31st.

Ms. Ullmer reminded everyone that to participate in Round Robin or Secret Sisters one must be a guild member.

Quilt County - Marcia Gilson reminded the group that Quilt County still has some venues that need shows, and asked that if anyone is interested in pulling together a show to contact her. The deadline for getting shows organized is December 31st so that the fliers etc can be printed.

Quilts in the Garden - Ms. Gilson reported that the guild is looking to do an eco-friendly tour this year. The idea being that attendees could walk, bike or take transportation provided by the guild, to each of the gardens. She also stated that each of the participating gardens are fairly flat and are all very accessible.

Block of the Month - Barb Baxter conducted the block of the month drawing. Ms. Baxter also showed completed blocks for the October Block of the Month. She indicated that the block should be completed in flannels and fall colors and also reported that the pattern was on the Mary's River Quilt Guild website.

Hospitality - Diane Jackson conducted the hospitality drawing. Prizes were 2 flannel fat quarters and a $10 gift certificate.

Ms. Strub Announced that the group organizing the Oregon Gardens Quilt Show informed her that the group would waive the fee for displaying the 2011 Raffle Quilt if the guild provided 12 entries to the show.

Show and tell was held.

A 5 minute break occurred.

Jan Tallis introduced Colleen Wise. Ms. Wise shared some of her quilts with the groups and also provided some insight into her methods.

Ms. Ullmer adjourned that meeting at 8:45 pm.
