Mary’s River Quilt Guild

General Meeting May 22, 2014

President Beth called the meeting to order and welcomed members, new members and guests.
She shared briefly the programs for the next few months:  June will be Jessy Yorgey; July will be a picnic at a park; and August will be Janet Fogg with the guild meeting at the First Presbyterian Church in Corvallis.  All those attending the Friday workshop need to pay for the class by the end of May and checks need to be made to Janet Fogg.

Sisters Quilt Show:  The guild will again have its quilts hanging in the drug store and up to 100 quilts can be displayed but the shop has some restrictions on the sizes for space management.  Members can sell quilts as part of the show and it is noted that the guild requests ten percent of the sale.  Guild members are asked to work two hour shifts during the show on Saturday by signing up on the guild website. Sharon Hoyer generously volunteered to cover Friday raffle ticket sales.   Information was given for a rental at Sisters for $120 per day, accommodating four persons.

Raffle 2014:  Erica advised that a request has been made to include a booth in the vendor area for Fall Festival.  Raffle ticket sells and quilt tying will be the guild focus but members are also invited to sell items at the booth but they will need to forward fifteen percent of the revenue to Fall Festival.

Raffle 2015:  Theresa needs to have all the packets returned ASAP and a date will be set in June to begin assembly of the quilt.  Members will be advised of the specific date, time and location for participation.

Challenge:  Judy encouraged members to work on their challenge quilts and reminded everyone that it does not have to be a large quilt.  Members love to see what others are doing.  Don’t get tangled up with too many ideas – grab a thread and go with it.  Challenge is meant to be FUN.

QIG:  Linda advised that there were forms available for quilt submissions for the garden show event and separate forms for those contributing to the Michael J Fox Parkinson research fund raiser.  Each garden needs guild members so many two hour shifts are available and accommodation can be made if you wish to work a specific garden or time.  Posters are available and if you are traveling to cities and quilt shops within a reasonable distance, please take a poster to advertise the show.  Tickets will be available as of August 1st at guild, Garlands Nursery, Shonnard’s Nursery, Home Grown Nursery, JanniLou’s and Quilt Work Patches.

Round Robin:  Cindy reminded us that everyone can watch the progress of the quilts by checking the website – a great way to share the progress of the group’s projects.

BOM:  Linda shared an example of the paper piecing project for next month and has step by step examples for members to view during break time.  This month’s blocks were won by Linda.

Hospitality:  The drawing for fat quarters (in red for next month’s BOM) and a gift certificate was held.
Beth invited members to visit the stations in the back of the room for quilts and patterns available by the evening’s speaker, to view the P2P and Sweet Grief art work on display and to visit the service committee table during break time.

Show and tell was followed by a short break.

Wendy Mamattah presented her program Out of Africa: Story of Adinkra which provided the history of the area around Ghana and the symbols which were developed by the people to share their stories.

Meeting adjourned.

Mary’s River Quilt Guild

General Meeting of April 24, 2014

President Beth called the meeting to order, welcomed all attending and invited guests to stand and introduce themselves.

Program chair Corey reviewed the coming month’s speakers noting:

May’s presenter will be Wendy Mamattah who will share the use of Adinkra symbols in her quilting. Her work can be previewed at Braid and Stitch

June brings us Jessy Yorgey of Quiltwork Patches discussing the opening, building and current changes of quilt shop ownership challenges.

July will be a picnic / social.

August’s featured speaker is Janet Fogg and this program will be held at First Presbyterian Church (114 SW 8th St, Corvallis). All of those who have signed up for the workshop need to have your monies ($75) to Corey by May.

Raffle 2014 -- Raffle Quilt: Erica requested that members sign up for the upcoming venues - Quilt Safari and the Poultry Exchange. Raffle 2015: Thanks were given to all of those who attended the workshop / workday. Packets upon return need to be checked in and more packets are available.

QIG --- Quilts in the Garden : There is still a need for two garden hosts; sign ups can be done for two hour shifts on August 16th please take a form and provide information on quilt(s) that you are able to provide for the show. Peggy also advised that one garden will have small quilts for sale with all of the quilt sale proceeds going to Parkinson Fund Research. Members are encouraged to donate small quilts for the Parkinson fundraiser and forms will be available for a tax deduction.

Round Robin: The next exchange / round was to take place on April 28th

BOM --- Activities: Linda displayed the current month’s block and an example of the May block. The drawing for blocks prepared this month went to Sharon F.

Library: Karen provided information on the new books added this month and asked for new assistants for this committee. Please contact her or Beth if you are interested.

Hospitality: The drawing for fat quarters went to Barbara VDV and Jeani S. received the gift certificate this month. Beth noted that the next MRGQ board meeting will be on May 7th Church (114 SW 8th Street, Corvallis, basement meeting room).

The next guild meeting will be May 22nd

Those with Show and Tell items were invited to share their work. As part of Show and Tell the Service Committee showed a number of completed quilts, invited members to adopt quilts in need of completion (binding and quilting). Because three nonprofits have requested a number of quilts, they are in need of additional larger quilts. Thanks were passed to three guild members who did donate quilts for these special requests.

After a short break Naomi W. provided information on the International Block Exchange with Australia. In addition to a theme there were two fabrics provided for each of the participants (8 in Australia and 8 from MRQG) for the block exchange. The Bunbury group was coordinated through Patchwork and Quilting with the work of women from the Bunbury area available for viewing at stirlingstreetarts.com.au. --- Bunbury Patchwork Quilting Group --- Guild members shared the quilts that they created with the blocks from the exchange and explain which blocks they created for the exchange.

Beth provided information on the Bay Area Quilt Guild of Urayasu, Tokyo, Japan and was able to provide a slide show of the quilts and their makers for this group. Our guild members shared their quilts and which blocks they designed for the exchange. The meeting was adjourned.
