Submitted By: MRQG Historian/Photographer  LuAnn Kessi Mary’s River Quilt Guild General Meeting of February 28, 2013 President Beth called the meeting to order, welcoming members and recognizing two guests and a new guild member.  It was also noted that for those who have not paid the 2013 dues, this could be done during the break time. COMMITTEE REPORTS: No reports submitted by Vice Moderator, Treasurer, Secretary, Library or Historian Program reminded that Kathy Curler, a quilt judge will be the speaker in March and discuss the process and details that judges evaluate at quilt shows. Newsletter articles must be submitted by March 6th. Challenge committee still has some packets available for purchase and reminds everyone that the prize for best story is also to be treasured and a favorite part of the challenge quilt night. Marketing advised that there are raffle ticket packets available for members to pick up and sale and that Fitness Over Fifty is the next location for ticket sales on March 4th and 5th.  Help is needed for Tuesday morning ticket sales. Raffle Quilt 2014 is set up on the quilting frame at JanniLou’s and members are invited and encouraged to stop by and join the quilt party. Raffle Quilt 2015 still needs two persons to act as co-chairs for the making of this quilt.  There is a pattern selected and guide giving step by step information covering purchasing the fabric to the finishing of the quilt.  Beth would like to have the co-chairs in place by the March meeting. Quilt County will take place at various venues August to October and there are several locations available for small groups to select and create their own mini quilt show.  In order to allow sufficient time to create publicity, it is asked that all groups register and provide a brief note on their theme by April. The Philomath Chamber of Commerce sponsors the Samaritan Awards program each year and MRQG was able to recognize LuAnn Kessi and Nancy Bryant for the Permission to Play program.  Also recognition was given to Virginia Gregory and Kathi Borrego for their assistance with this program. Round Robin held their first meeting and exchanged the center blocks for this year’s quilts.  You can get a peak on the guild blog and watch the progress of this year’s creations. Chicks with Attitude:  A work day was scheduled for March 2 from 9am-12pm at the Consumer Power offices.  It is hoped that one hundred to one hundred and twenty chicks will be made this year to be sold at the raffle ticket venues. Potholders:  Also those interested in making potholders are invited to use a flower basket theme so that these can be sold at raffle ticket venues and coordinate with the quilt county theme this year. Secret Sisters met at Blue Sky for dinner prior to the meeting and had nineteen of the twenty-three members present.   BOM of the month was a Dutchman’s Puzzle and next month is an Irish Chain block.  Note that the April and May items currently on the web will be changed to new blocks.  April’s block will be changed to a Kimono block and May to a Hawaiian shirt block. Those participating in the Japanese block exchange were reminded that next month is the deadline for completion and delivery of the blocks.   It is hoped that the blocks going to Japan and those received will be available for view at next month’s meeting. Permission to Play reported that they made woven quilts at this month’s meeting and have had as many as twenty participants at their program. Service Committee advised that they have items for sale and hope to have more in coming months thanks to a generous donation. Quilt viewing is available at Creative Crafts currently and on March 8th from 6:30-9pm there is a quilt show at the LaSalle Center called the Many Faces of Africa. Hospitality had its monthly drawing for fat quarters and gift certificates.  Remember to wear your name tag and put your name in this monthly drawing. Show and Tell was followed by a short break. Jan Bressler of JanniLou’s Creations presented our program sharing the story of she and her sister’s story of going from quilters to store owners and quilt designers. Next Meeting: Thursday, January 24, 2013  ypm Benton County Historial Museum Philomath, Oregon Submitted By: LuAnn Kessi MRQG Historian MARY’S RIVER QUILT GUILD GENERAL MEETING NOVEMBER 15, 2012 The meeting was called to order by Lisa who offered the following announcements. -There will be 28 quilts from the guild going to the Stitches in Bloom show and they need to be delivered to Lisa’s house by January 15th so that she can deliver them for the show. -Committee chairs need volunteer hours by all members so that the year-end reports may be completed. -Recognition and thanks were extended to board members by Lisa and each was given a gift certificate to one of the local quilt shops. -Raffle 2013 quilt was presented for all the members to view and thanks given to all those who worked on it. The election ballots for President and Treasurer were handed out to all those at the meeting then the ballots were gathered for count by our vice-moderator. Committee Reports Our current treasurer announced that she had forms and those interested could submit their 2013 membership dues. Service committee noted that there were a number of quilts set up and ready to tie at the back of the room.  There were quilts in need of binding, machine quilting and one for hand quilting with a request that members take these home to complete as needed. Challenge committee had received several questions about the rules for 2013 and clarified some of the information for the members.  It was also noted that suggestions made after this year’s program will be adopted for next year such as members selecting the best story rather than the judges, improvement of the lighting and that it really is okay to show an unfinished project.  Remember unfinished projects often have the best stories. Round Robin reminded everyone that this would be the last meeting opportunity to sign up for next year.  Anyone deciding to join will need to call Cindy Graff before December 31 if they wish to join the group after this evening. Secret Sisters also had sign-up sheets which need to be returned before year end. Block of the Month had the drawing for this month’s blocks and shared the first block for 2013.  The theme of the blocks for next year will be Cultural Heritage which may represent countries or cultural traditions. Hospitality had the drawings of our monthly gifts for those attending who remember to wear their name tags.      The election of officers was announced with Beth Rietveld becoming the guild President and Linda Curry the Treasurer. Show and Tell of quilts made by the members took place. Beth represented the guild members with our thanks to Lisa and Priscilla by presenting friendship blocks made by the guild members.  We greatly appreciate the outstanding work and leadership of these two members. A clipboard was passed around the room so that members could sign up to help with the raffle sales at Stitches in Bloom.  Those who have quilts in the show or aid with ticket sales have free entry to the show.  The featured speaker at the show Charlotte Warr Andersen will speak at our January guild meeting on January 24th and be at the show January 25-26, 2013. Program led the group in a getting to know you activity and then members were invited to tie quilts with the aid and instruction of the service committee. Meeting closed. Mary’s River Quilt Guild General Meeting

October 25, 2012

The meeting was called to order by President Lisa who then welcomed visitors and explained the evening’s program order.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

The November guild meeting will be one week earlier, November 15^th, because of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Jean McDaniel won second place in Portland at the Western Master Quilters Expo.

There is a need for at least one more entry for the Stitches in Bloom show.

Requested volunteer(s) to assist with the binding of the 2013 Raffle quilt once the quilting is completed.  

Naomi shared that nine of the eleven block sets have been submitted for the Australian block exchange and may be seen on display at the back of the room.

The November guild meeting will include the election for President and Secretary.  At this time candidates are Beth Rietveld for President and Linda Curry for Treasurer.

Raffle 2012 quilt was at FOF with good sales results.

Show and Tell of members’ quilts took place.

The Challenge Quilt tradition and rules were explained for this year, Traditions with a Twist.   This was followed by a skit introducing the 2013 theme:  It’s Elementary Dear Watson – Back to Basics.  After members shared their quilts and stories for this year’s challenge, there was a break so that the judges could make their decisions and ballots cast for the Viewers’ Choice award.

The business meeting included the following reports:

Deadline for the newsletter is November 3^rd.

The service committee received two completed quilts back and needs only seven more to complete the COI goal of one hundred quilts.

Raffle Quilt 2013 will probably not be available for preview until after January because it will be at the Stitches in Bloom show during the January guild meeting but an effort will be made to email a copy of the completed quilt to guild members.

Raffle Quilt 2014 will have information on hand quilting classes in the upcoming newsletter.

Round Robin reminded everyone that this and the November meeting are the last opportunities to sign up for participation for next year.

Secret Sisters also has applications available and those interested in participating need to sign up by the end of the year.

Block of the Month displayed completed November block examples in navy blue and white and then the drawing for this month’s blocks took place.

Hospitality had their drawing for a set of fat quarters (in the November BOM colors) and a gift certificate to one of our local quilt stores.

The judge’s decisions were announced and awards given for this year’s Challenge as follows:

Best Story: Flo C.

Best Use of Fabric:  Sharon H.

For Theme:  Diane J.

Grand Prize and Viewer’s Choice:  Gloria G.

The meeting ended with the drawing for Raffle Quilt 2012 – the winner was Kathy Krause.

MARY’S RIVER QUILT GUILD

GENERAL MEETING OF SEPTEMBER 27, 2012

The meeting began with President Lisa welcoming everyone and introducing visitors.  She then introduced Irene of the Benton County History Museum staff who shared information of the upcoming fund raiser for the museum.  The museum raises about half of the operating budget with fund raising activities and they have an upcoming.  For the auction they are looking for items which guild members may have to offer and to invite all of us to make a purchase of a special item.  The auction dates are October 12-29, 2012.

Three upcoming quilt shows were noted:  Legacies in Thread by the Emerald Valley Quilters of Eugene on September 29 and 30^th; Purple Frog in Jefferson has a show September 29 and 30^th; Seeing Red at the Old Aurora Colony Museum will take place from October 12-21,2012.

Our guild needs a few more entries for the Stitches in Bloom show which will take place January 25-26, 2013 with workshops on January 22-24^th.  Entry of a quilt also provides entry into the show.

Members are invited to make friendship blocks (instructions on the MRQG website) for the outgoing Treasurer in blue and green batiks and for our outgoing President in bright batiks.

Treasurer reported that the guild raised $930 on the Chicks and potholder sales at the museum.

Service Committee invited members to adopt quilts that need quilting or binding.  Those adopting one of the quilts will receive a fat quarter.

The Challenge committee reminded everyone the October meeting will feature this year’s challenge quilts and stories of the members.  The packets and information on 2013 Challenge will be available for $10 and include a yard of fabric.

Jean McDaniel will be quilting the 2013 Raffle quilt.

Quilt County was explained as an event that happens every other year for Benton County and 2013 will be the 20^th anniversary of the event.  People are invited to find a location and gather some friends to mount a show of their work.  A sign-up sheet was passed around for those interested and this will be repeated during meetings for the next couple of months.    A firm and complete list of locations will be needed by April, 2013 in order to allow time for the information to be published for the September, 2013 show.  

The Raffle 2014 committee is organizing a hand quilting class at JanniLou’s shop with cost of the class ($15)  being reimbursed with five hours contribution of time on the quilt for 2014.   The monies will come from the scholarship funds as approved by the board and a sign-up sheet was passed for members to indicate interest in a hand quilting class.

Round Robin chair Cindy explained the process used for the current year’s projects and invited interested guild members to join the group next year.  They need all interested persons to sign up by December 31, 2012.  A sign-up sheet will be available for those interested over the next two months.

Secret Sisters shared information on their picnic last week which twenty-one people attended.   There is information and forms on the guild website for this group and they ask all interested persons to please sign up by year end so that all may be invited to the first meeting of the new year, January, 2013.

Block of the month committee displayed next month’s block, introduced next year’s theme of Cultural Heritage and had the drawing for the blocks brought to the meeting.

Hospitality had the drawing for those members in attendance who wear their nametags.

Show and Tell began with the Round Robin group displaying their quilts.

After a short break, our speaker, guild member Beth Reitveld, presented Quilting Around the World, My Adventures in Tokyo and Paris.

General Meeting

August 23, 2012

President Lisa called the meeting to order and welcomed the visitors.

Announcements:

-Monies from this evenings silent auction will go to the JoAnne Cutler Hay Scholarship Fund

-N. Weidner had a quilt accepted at the Des Moines AQ Show and she is attending this event.

-In January, 2013 the Stitches in Bloom event in Silverton at the Oregon Gardens will be the first location for ticket sales of the guilds raffle quilt.  Twenty-five quilts will allow the guild to have a booth at no charge for the ticket sales.  Entries due by January 11, cost ten dollars per entry (but quilt entry also provides a ticket to the show) and the show dates are January 24-25, 2013.  The show will feature Charlotte Warr Anderson who will be the guilds speaker at our January meeting.  

-The treasurer reported that overall raffle ticket sales are about $80 below last year’s total at this time.

-Library shared information on the new books and encourages all members to take advantage of the wide selection of material available to members.

-The newsletter deadline is September 7^th.

-Service committee thanks all those who helped tie quilts at the fair and quilts are available for binding.  Those who add bindings receive a fat quarter as thanks for their assistance.

-Those interested in working on next years challenge selections were invited to remain for a short meeting, after the guild meeting.  Remember that our October meeting will be the show and tell reveal of Traditions with a Twist, the current 2012 challenge.

-The 2013 raffle quilt was displayed and requests for an appliqued label and bids from long arm quilters requested.  The quilt is 98.5 inches by 111 inches.

-Round Robin participants advised that their quilts will be shown at the September meeting.

-BOM had a drawing for eight blocks submitted for this month and displayed next month’s block.  They are hoping to have new people join the committee for next year to share in the fun of planning the future BOM selections.

-Hospitality held the drawing for fat quarters and a gift card to Creative Crafts.  Also she provided an update on the number of pot holders and Chicks with Attitude that have been sold in the museum shop.  There have been 77 Chicks sold and 83 potholders sold raising about $900 for the guild.

Show and Tell of quilts by guild members was followed by a break in the meeting to allow attendees to continue bidding on items.  Last month’s auction resulted in sales of $332.

The meeting resumed with our program which included the sharing of the members who had quilts in our show, One of My Favorites.

Meeting was adjourned and members invited to collect their winning bid items.
