General Meeting of February 27, 2014
Announcements:
Members are asked to contribute to the guild by helping set up or break down at least one meeting per year; a clipboard was passed to provide an opportunity to set a date for participation.
There were special items available for the evening’s program and those gathered were asked to confirm that they each had received a raffle ticket.
The Benton County Historical Society sent a letter thanking the guild for contributions and also asking if anyone had contributed a tote for the recent auction. If anyone did make this contribution, please contact Beth or Sharon (guild secretary).
Guests were welcomed and asked to introduce themselves; there were fifteen guests present.
Philomath sponsors an awards program which allows organizations in the community to recognize outstanding members of their groups. The guild offered the name of Emily Miller who has been a cornerstone of the service committee as a worker, organizer and bright light for the group.
Beth noted that she will be leading a discussion at the Corvallis Public Library on March 12th of The Round House by Louise Erdrich, winner of the 2012 National Book Award for Fiction and invites anyone interested to come and join the discussion of the book.
Program: Corey began by inviting women to sign up for the Janet Fogg workshop of August 29th which will be held at Grand Oaks; cost will be $75 and includes fabric and instruction. Janet Fogg will be the guild speaker for our August 28th meeting.
In March, Jamie Taylor will present a program on those Loopy Tulip Designs, Baltimore Albums.
In April quilts made by those participating in the block exchange with guilds from Japan and Australia will be shared.
Challenge: All packets have been sold for this year.
Raffle 2014: The quilt is currently on display in the Benton County History museum. Raffle tickets can be purchased at all guild meetings and members can pick up packets of tickets to offer opportunities to family, friends and colleagues a chance to win this gorgeous quilt.
Quilts in the Garden: The date for the show will be August 16th from 10 am to 5 PM. There are seven gardens and any quilt will fit into one of themes selected. Themes are Quilts of Imagination, Quilts of the Garden, Not Your Grandma’s Quilt; We are Small but Mighty, Tried and True-Antique Quilts with a Story, Quilts from Across the Pacific, Quilts from Caring Hands and Quilts Are Class Acts. Seven garden coordinators are needed and they will receive information and training. Please consider being a coordinator for this one day event.
Round Robin: This group held its first meeting on Monday and pictures will soon be available on the website.
BOM: Linda thanked those who participated this month by bringing in blocks and showed examples of next month’s block. Remember you can make one for the guild BOM and a second one which can become part of a quilt to be made at the end of the year from this year’s block patterns. Shelley B. won this month’s blocks.
Hospitality: There was a drawing for fat quarters appropriate for the March BOM and a gift certificate which were won by Theresa V. and Cindy G. respectively.
Show and Tell by members took place beginning with quilts from the service committee. The committee advised that they have 143 quilts in process and invites those able to help by quilting, binding or assembling blocks to help complete quilts which the guild will then donate to various organizations in our community.
Members of the Corvallis Modern Quilt Guild showed some of their quilts which are part of the Riley Blake Challenge. This group meets at the Market of Choice on the second Wednesday of the month from 7-8 PM for meetings and on the last Saturday of the month for sewing time from 12-6 PM in the upstairs meeting room of the Market. After a short break, Pam Raby presented a program on Modern Quilts sharing the background history and development of this trend plus she shared beautiful examples of modern quilts.
