MRQG General Membership Meeting of September 22, 2016

The meeting was called to order by Interim President Barbara G at 6:57 p.m.

There were no new members to introduce. There were two visitors.

Announcements:

Barbara G reported that there is an opening for a secretary or co-secretary as Jan C needs to resign at this time. Lisa U is agreeable to stay on as co-secretary or resign if someone would like to be the full time secretary.

Quilt County – Barbara G suggested members refer to the article by Marcia G in the newsletter regarding Quilt County. She also reported that there is a fundraiser at Philomath Scout Lodge on  Saturday, September 24th, from 9:00-3:00. Lots of fabric has been donated and will be for sale at this event.

Raffle Quilt – Jo C reported that the Raffle Quilt is being displayed at the Benton Historical Museum and then will be displayed at The Wine Vault in Philomath. She is still looking for a chairpersonn for this committee for next year. This job could be broken down into a group approach: a chairperson would oversee the committee and then sub-chairpersons assigned for each site at which the Raffle Quilt would be displayed.

Secret Sisters: Debbie G reported that this group met for the annual picnic and there was good food, good conversation and birthday celebrations enjoyed by all who attended. In October, the Halloween Party will be at Wendi Bracken’s house. Each member is requested to bring a trick or treat…related to quilting.

Beth R spoke about needing volunteers for various positions in the Guild. There are openings as Treasurer, Secretary, Raffle Quilt Committee Chairperson, Vice-President or President/co-President (depending upon what Barbara G decides to do.) There are many people in the Guild who are very qualified and she encouraged members to consider any opportunities in which they might be interested. The Board meets every other month.

Round Robin – Cindy G stated it is time to start thinking about next year’s Round Robin. This year’s quilts were completed in August and will be shown at the November 17th meeting. Cindy has a handout that explains Round Robin more fully which is available to members. This committee commences in January each year and is a progressive style of quilt construction. Each person provides the fabric for her quilt. The committee meets on Monday nights at Cindy’s home in Corvallis. One must sign up no later than December 31st.. It is a great challenge and learning experience.

Block of the Month: Shelley showed next month’s block which is a beehive.  Shelley encouraged members if they have a desire to create quilt blocks to please submit them. Sharon is the winner of this month’s drawing.

Hospitality: two fat quarters and a gift certificate to Finally Together Quilts were awarded to two winners.

Challenge Quilt:  Judy J informed members that the Challenge Quilt display will be at the October meeting. There are packets for next year and they will be $10.00 and there will only be 40 available. More information will follow.

Service Committee: Lynn G thanked all who helped clear the backlog of quilt tops over this year. Service Committee is making Quilts of Valor for Benton Hospice and has sent 7 quilts this month and now have 2 more. This will be an on- going project.

Show and Tell: lots of beautiful quilts!!

Program: Cindy G introduced the speaker of the evening, Nancy Lee Chong, “Queen of Needleturn”. Nancy learned Hawaiian quiltmaking early in her career. Her discussion covered a combination of Hawaiian quiltmaking and “Confessions of an Applique Addict”. Nancy discussed a Thread Caddy invented by Pat Campbell and showed the usefulness of same…a great tool for carrying applique tools while traveling. Beam and Read light is a great tool also which was shown and explained. She explained quite a bit of the history behind Hawaiian quiltmaking and shared tools and techniques for hand appliquing. A workshop will be held on the day following this meeting for those interested in learning more.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:48 p.m.
