General Meeting April 28, 2016

Interim president Barbara Gordon called the meeting to order and welcomed a new member and guests in attendance.  The following announcements were shared.

• The deadline for the guild newsletter is May 7, 2016
• The executive committee of the guild will meet May 4th at the Philomath Library
• This weekend Paramount Sewing has Rob Appell teaching a reverse applique class for which there were still a few openings.
• There was a request for the pattern for the 2008 Raffle Quilt and Barbara asked if anyone knew where to locate the pattern.  The unfortunate answer is that there is no pattern and this information will be relayed back.
• Tonight assistance is needed in putting away tables and chairs after the meeting.  Also please sign up for a future guild meeting to assist with set up and take down.
• Linda Brown has a contact with a number of men’s ties to donate if anyone is interested.

Committee Reports
Challenge:  All the packets have been sold.

Sisters Quilt Show:  Marcia Gilson has asked that those who are sending quilts to the show please bring them to the May and June meeting.  Also those who have quilts for the Philomath Library show are asked to have quilts here for her to pick up at the May meeting.

Marketing:  Jo Casselberry asked if anyone would be available to help with the raffle table at JanniLou’s Friday.  If you have not received an email message(s) for volunteer opportunities at Sisters or the fair, please let her know and she will add your name to the list for Sign Up Genius.

2017 Raffle:  Arrangements have been made to have the quilt sent to a long arm quilter and once it is returned all that remains to be done is the binding.  The quilt should be completed by fall.

Round Robin:  Cindy shared that the first exchange was made on April 25th and pictures should be available on the guild blog soon. 

QITG:  Cheryl had sign-up sheets providing opportunities for members to participate by showing a quilt, working in one of the gardens and of course they can also help with hosting one of the gardens.   Because it is expected to be warm the committee would like to know if members would be willing to loan the guild Easy Ups for the July 23rd event to provide some protection from the sun.  Advertising has been submitted to a number of papers in the area; flyers and bookmarks will be available at the May meeting so that members can distribute them to friends and businesses in the area.

Library:  No report.

Secret Sisters:  The group had their first progressive dinner with all having a wonderful time, good food and opportunities to get to know one another better.

BOM:   May’s flower block was shown and members can obtain instructions from the guild website or written ones were available at the meeting.  This month’s blocks were won by Debbie Garvin who also received a $10 gift certificate for participating.

Hospitality:  New member Ann Dyer won the gift certificate and Theresa Valentine the fat quarters for this month’s name tag drawing.

Program:  Harriet warned that only ten people are signed up for the August 26th workshop but at least five more people are needed to have a sufficient number to have it take place.  In September Nancy Chong will be the speaker and a class will be held at JanniLou’s for all members interested.    The May 26th meeting will feature Ann Johnston of Lake Oswego discussing Which Came First, a session on quilt design.

Show and Tell began with the Service Committee quilts displaying completed quilts.  There are requests from Oak Creek Facility (8 more quilts requested), Partners Place, and Samaritan’s Young Adult Cancer Treatment Center.  If you are able to quilt or bind a quilt please visit the Service Committee desk to pick one up so that we can assist in supporting these caring organizations.

After a short break Harriet introduced our speaker Dodi Poulsen who shared her accidental beginnings as a quilter and her expertise on color.   She is a quilt educator, fabric designer, quilt designer and can be found on cruises featuring the Quilt Camp at Sea programs.  For those who may have missed one of her tips for organization, she recommended using Silver Comic Book Boards for your fabric storage.

MRQG General meeting minutes

March 24, 2016

Meeting called to order at 7:00 by Sherri.  Sherri is moving to Washington and this will be her last meeting as President.  Barbara Gordon will be taking over for her for the remainder of the year.

Welcome guests:  Deb from Alsea (friend of Colleen); Ann from Washington (friend of Cindy G.)

Announcements:  none

Committee Reports:

Challenge:  Judy reports there are still challenge packets available (5 packets/$10 each).  See Judy.

Sisters:  Marcia passed a clipboard asking for quilt sign-ups for display in the Pharmacy.

Books/Up, up and Away:  quilts for display at Library and Museum (need by first of June).

Setup/Take down:  signup at back table for future meetings.

Quilt county:   no report

2016 Raffle Quilt:  Jo announced tickets are available in packets for members to sell to friends and family.

Clipboard passed around for Safari volunteers:  April 22-30.  Watch for Sign-up genius.  Fabulous prize will be awarded to one lucky person who has helped to fill volunteer slots or sold individual packets.

2017 Raffle quilt:  no report

Secret Sisters:  Wendi reports that March was a spring fling gift steal.  Nice gifts stolen via white elephant rules.  April will be a progressive dinner:  Debbie – appetizers; Wendi – salads; Theresa – dessert.  Houses are in same neighborhood.

QnG:  Cheryl J. asking for volunteers and quilts to be displayed for the July 23 event.  Six gardens that are very different from each other.  Looking for small quilts/whimsical, quilts that fit a broad theme.  If you signed up last month, you don’t need to sign up again.

Round robin:  Cindy reminds that next meeting is April 25, 7 pm at Cindy’s house.  Photos will be on the blog.

Library:  no report

BOM:  Sharon F discussed next month’s block (butterfly).  Only 6 blocks this month.  Remember for every 10 blocks there is a $10 gift certificate added to the stash for an end of the year drawing from participants.  Sharon F.  won the drawing of the blocks for this month.

Hospitality:  Fat quarters won by Karen G.; Gift Certificate won by Cheryl J.

Program:   Next month is  Dodi Poulsen from Poulsbo, WA.  Dodi has been a quilt instructor for over 30 years and teaches throughout the country. She designs quilt patterns for all skill levels and has over 70 published patterns.  Dodi  designs fabric for Riley Blake Designs under the label Lullabelle, some of which can be seen at the Sashgals website.

Workshop:  Still openings in the Colleen Blackwood workshop at 9:30 Friday, March 25 at JLC.    Future workshops are sparsely filled making it cost prohibitive.  Please consider signing up for these enriching experiences.  (August 26:  Ann Shaw on fractured landscape; Sept 23:  Nancy Chong teaching at JLC day after guild).  Need more interest to have these workshops fly.

Service committee:  Lynn G. and committee members showed off some of the finished quilts that you have pledged to finish this year.  A few of these quilts will go for young adult’s having chemo and to the men’s cold weather shelter.  There are packets and items for sale as well as free items.  Thank you for helping the committee finish quilts by binding and quilting.  We appreciate your help.

Break

Program:  Colleen Blackwood, from Pendleton, Oregon is tonight’s speaker.  She is a quilt designer and teaches machine quilting.  She is teaching a workshop tomorrow at JLC.  There are still openings.  It begins at 9:30 a.m.  Colleen has patterns for sale.  She will take cash or check.  She has contributed to this guild for many years by buying raffle quilt tickets!  She has taught at Sisters for a number of years.

Next meeting is April 28.

Next board meeting will be May 4, 6:30 pm, location TBA.
