Mary’s River Quilt Guild
General Meeting of November 21, 2013
The meeting was called to order and a welcome extended to
all attending. President Beth noted that
the usual order of the program would be different and invited all those with a
Show and Tell project to please come forward.
Show and Tell began with a B(r)ang as we saw the winning item from a
recent fund raiser for Project HER which provides support for breast cancer
survivors.
Those who participated in the Round Robin series this past
year showed their projects and an invitation was extended for everyone
interested in joining next year to sign up by December 31st.
President Beth asked the current guild board to come forward
and offered words of thanks and bags of sweet treats for them.
The ballots for the election of vice-president and secretary
were passed out to everyone by the current vice president Erica Koenig and
votes cast and ballots collected.
Beth advised that each meeting will include an opportunity
to sign up to help set up for the guild meetings and tidy up after the guild
meetings. A clipboard will be passed
with the dates noted for next year’s meetings and members are asked to sign up
for at least one meeting.
Raffle 2014 Quilt was shown and a request for assistance
issued. The quilt needs a name and guild
members are invited to make a suggestion.
Block of the Month announced that next year’s theme will be
Parade of Stars with the patterns of each star designed to become more
challenging as the year progresses. The
January block was shown.
Hospitality had the name tag drawing with Linda Jewett
winning the fabric quarters and Phyliis Pearson winning a gift certificate.
Block of the Month continued by showing the February 2014
block and having the drawing for this month’s Crazy Quilt blocks which were won
by Diane Jackson.
The pot holder committee noted that they have a few items
left for purchase and reminded that they make wonderful hostess gifts for the
holidays.
Secret Sisters has forms available to sign up for
participation in the coming year with forms needing to be returned by December
31st. During this past year
participants were invited to make pillow cases which were delivered to Jackson
Street Youth who were very excited to receive them. Anyone interested in contributing more pillow
cases are asked to get them to Jan Andrews-McKirdie by December 19th
so that they may be delivered before the end of the holiday season.
Members were reminded that the guild does have scholarship
funds available for those who may wish to attend a special quilting class. Applications are available on the web site
and if your application is approved the guild asks that you share your
experience at a future meeting.
Quilts in the Garden have had a date change with the event
now taking place on August 16, 2014 (Saturday).
As the date draws nearer the guild will learn about the many unexpected
opportunities and themes for the various gardens. For this month we learned that one of the
gardens will have antique quilts which should come with a story. The story may be about who made it, how it
came to the current owner or perhaps something special about the time period in
which it was made.
Marketing now has a chair, Erica Koenig and to help expand
our fund raising the guild is interested in any ideas for new venues to show
and sale raffle tickets for the coming year.
Challenge committee has only one packet left (cost $10) and
may have a special plan / surprise for 2015 thanks to a special donation to the
guild.
Service Committee thanked everyone for helping to tie
quilts; they reported that the quilts displayed during Quilt County have been
donated and that they have thank you fat quarters for those who have
contributed time on making, quilting or binding items the last few months.
The next guild newsletter article deadline is January 10,
2014.
Corey Arentz announced confirmed and potential programs for
the coming year. In January we have a
special movie night with a viewing of Stitch which shares the story of three
people who prepare for the Houston quilt show.
The coming year will cover a variety of topics using various fabrics and
techniques by outstanding teachers and quilters of Oregon.
The election results were announced confirming Carmen
Steggell as the new vice-president for the guild and Sharon Fries to be
Secretary for another two years. Thanks
and congratulations to both candidates.
The night’s silent auction was closed to bidding at 8:30 pm
with monies raised to be used for the scholarship funds and the service
committee.
The next guild meeting will be January 23, 2014 and the next
board meeting will be February 5, 2014.
Meeting adjourned with best wishes for the holidays.
Respectfully submitted,
Sharon Fries, Secretary
